
Dr Mikel Gastaca

Dr. Gastaca graduated from the Basque Country University. He is senior consultant of the Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation Unit at Cruces University Hospital in Bilbao. In this position he has participated in more than 1500 liver transplantations. He is also Surgical Director of the Laparoscopic Liver Surgery program and Associate Professor of Surgery at the Basque Country University. He has been visiting clinician in different national and international centers. He gained the European Board of Transplantation Surgery in 2010.
He is the current secretary of the board of the Spanish Liver Transplant Society (SETH) and he is the past secretary of the HPB Surgery Committee of the Spanish Surgeons Association.
Dr. Gastaca has a long-standing interest in laparoscopic liver surgery and in outcomes after liver transplantation including: the use of extended criteria donors, biliary complications and immunosuppression. Currently, he is involved in the HUC Bilbao program of LT with controlled DCD donors maintained with normothermic regional perfusion in which more than 150 DCD liver transplantations have been performed so far.
He has been (co)-author of multiple peer-reviewed original articles and abstracts mainly related to clinical and surgical aspects of liver transplantation.
